Versatile Functionality

Posted by Shreve & Co. at 12:44:43 PM in Bell & Ross (16)

The Bell and Ross 126 Sports Watch is by far one of the most significant timepieces by the company.  The importance of the timepiece is derived not only from its high performance and total reliability as a sports chronograph with useful multi-functionality but also because of the wider breadth of versatility that the piece started for Bell & Ross. For those watch aficionados who prefer conventional fine horology over devices inspired by aeronautics and armed forces, this sports watch is a perfect choice over the Bell & Ross signature square flying-gaugelike appearance. The Sports watch is powered by an ETA 2894 automatic chronograph movement that is viewable through the clear caseback of the watch. The classy black dial holds two chronograph subdials and a calendar aperture between the fifth and fourth hours. The polished steel case complements well with the flat bezel and dial, giving the watch a vintage yet versatile feel. In general, the sports watch is a fine piece of durable instrument that is perfect for rugged and everyday wear.

It was “the Pearl King” Kokichi Mikimoto from Japan who first nurtured and produced the cultured pearl, and subsequently revolutionized the pearl culture industry. Later on, he founded the Mikimoto House of Pearls, which to this date proudly bears his name and legacy. With its significant role in the history of the pearl trade, as well as its reputable heritage is manufacturing the best cultured sea gems in the world, Mikimoto retains stringent standards on the material and craftsmanship of every jewelry piece that is stamped with its label. Mikimoto accepts on the finest materials, which requires at least an A or A+ grade, comprising barely 5% of the total pearls in Japan, before a single pearl makes it to any Mikimoto design. Only the finest materials such as 18k gold or platinum, high-quality G color diamonds, and the finest silk threads are used to complement the company’s immaculate pearls. World-Renowned Hidden Ingenuity

Posted by Shreve & Co. at 12:40:58 PM in Piaget (17)

Piaget is a recognized name in the watch industry, more so by the most prominent names in the field than most watch aficionados and experts. While the wide-ranging designs of Piaget’s cases and dials garner loyalty from different groups of people, the brand’s true strength lies within the timepieces that it has been creating for more than 30 years. Piaget is one of the most important manufacturers of movements and components for Swiss watches, which speaks a great deal considering “Swiss-made” are the watchmaking cream of the crop. In the past 10 years, the key focus of the brand has been the development of new and beautiful movements including the calibers Tourbillon, Tourbillon Relatif, Quantième Perpétuel  and  Flyback Chronograph, all engineered and designed in accordance with Piaget’s signature “thin movement” tradition. Most of Piaget’s pieces have see through open dials or clear case backs to show off the brand’s “hidden” ingenuity.

Where it All Began

Posted by Shreve & Co. at 12:39:43 PM in Panerai (17)

The rich history of Officine Panerai began in the Giovanni Panerai’s watchmaker’s shop at Ponte delle Grazie, Florence in the 1860’s. The shop also served as the city’s first watchmaking school before the brand moved to Pallazo Arcivescovile in Piazza San Giovanni, where its workshops still stands today under the more recent name “Orologeria Svizzera”. Panerai made its first recognizable dent in the history of horology when it created and patented Radiomir, a substance radium-based luminous powder, which it used to illuminate the watches it created for the Royal Italian Navy. Almost 40 years later, Panerai surpassed itself by replacing the functional Radiomir with an even better Luminor, made of tritium-based compound that was also patented as a Panerai trademark. After that achievement, the watchmaking brand has not stopped producing excellent watches and complications with its own touch of military efficiency.

The Freedom to Complicate

Posted by Shreve & Co. at 12:31:41 PM in Patek Philippe (17)

Patek Philippe is undoubtedly among the finest brands of “Cote de Geneve” luxury watches. Being the last family-owned watchmaking enterprise in Geneva, Patek Philippe enjoys broad creative freedom in developing new concepts for its world-acclaimed timepieces and complications. The spirit of innovation, which was fostered by the founders Antoni Patek and Jean-Adrien Philippe when they started the business in the 1840’s, still proliferates at the company’s workshops until this day. This is apparent in the unlimited number of complicated designs and functions that label regularly dishes out. For instance, the White Gold Men Grand Complications has a mechanical, manually wound movement, minute repeater and tourbillion. A Chime with two cathedral gongs are activated by a slide piece in the case, while displayed on the cloissone enamel dial are the day, month and leap year apertures along with moon phases and perpetual calendar. But that’s not all, through the caseback shows sidereal time, sky chart and moon orbit, aside from the “usual” functions of a highly remarkable watch.

A Colorful Performance Beneath the Waves

Posted by Shreve & Co. at 3:43:51 AM in Longines (16)

The most beautiful treasures of the ocean are found far beneath the wavy surface. Longines, the famous Swiss watch maker based in Saint-Imier, gives you a colorful option to explore the wonders under water with the new Hydroconquest diving chronograph. The rubber-strapped stainless steel case adorned with a red rotating bezel houses the Caliber L688, a self-winding mechanical column wheel chronograph movement beating at 28'800 vibrations per hours and providing 54 hours of power reserve. The dial is marked for hours with SuperLuminova painted numerals and polished silver hands. Other functions include a small second hand at 9 o’clock, a central 60 second hand, 30 minutes counter at 3 o’clock and 12 hours counter at 6 o’clock. The most important set of features is the 30-bar water resistance – it is, after all, a diver’s watch, a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with several anti-reflective layers and a secure unidirectional rotating crown. For a diver’s watch in its category, there is truly nothing much any water sport enthusiasts could wish for.

Of Time and Poetry

Posted by Shreve & Co. at 3:07:37 AM in Jaeger Lecoultre (18)

The stars wax and wane but never die, not in at least millions of years anyway. For people who journey through life, the stars are some of the beautiful, remarkable things that change with the seasons but never really change. The Rendez-Vous Celestial automatic watch, by the world’s premier maker of haute horlogerie pieces Jaeger-LeCoultre, is a tribute to this grand celestial display which has inspired Antoine LeCoultre’s dream for the Manufacture 180 years ago in the Vallée de Joux. The watch’s guilloché dial is made of beautiful lapoz lazuli that is marked with the numerals on a beautiful arc and depicts the Northern hemisphere with its rich collection of famous constellations. A shooting star indicates the month when the next rendez-vous would occur. A gem-set white gold case, held comfortably around the wrist with an alligator leather bracelet, houses the dial and the grand complication underneath, Calibre 809 automatic movement.

Black Glamour

“Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it’s not luxury.” Nevertheless, “A girl should be two things: Classy and fabulous.” Even forty years after her demise, Mademoiselle Coco Chanel’s words ring true in the designs and concepts of her world-famous fashion company. Chanel stands for everything a modern woman wants – comfortable style in glamorous fashion. Since 1926 when Coco first designed it, Chanel’s iconic “Little Black Dress” has been a must-have in every woman’s closet. What first came out as a long-sleeved black dress with dropped waist crêpe de chin that was featured in Vogue now embraces as many styles and cuts as there are girls and differing personalities – capped sleeves, long sleeves or none at all; elegant high necklines or daringly low like Princess Diana’s; nipped waist, sheath, A-lined or one-shouldered. Chanel’s slimming and elegant black dress shows off the dazzle of jewelry and perfectly goes for any occasion, all there is left to do is add a dash of confidence and smile.

The Quest for Perfection

Posted by Shreve & Co. at 6:12:25 AM in A. Lange & Sohne (15)

Saxony is steeped in a rich history of prosperity, devastations, recuperations, sophistication, and a fascination with mathematical and scientific instruments. The Saxon watchmaker Ferdinand A. Lange had an equally interesting journey as a watchmaker born in this region. Early on in his career, after his tutelage under masters like Johann Christian Friedrich Gutkaes, Ferdinand Lange had committed to the quest of the “perfect watch”, one he knew he had to create himself. Perfection is an elusive thing, but much excellence had come from this difficult quest as a result. A generation of Langes later, A. Lange & Söhne still designs and engineers watches with the determination to improve precision, enhance legibility, and refine convenience. Every timepiece is an outstanding balance between technical mastery and aesthetic perfection. The brands traditional elements such as the beautifully polished precision index adjuster, the hand-engraved balance cock and the gold chatons give the timepieces unrivalled sophistication while making the clockwork run with easy perfection.

Christopher Designs: Rekindling the Fire

Posted by Shreve & Co. at 6:06:00 AM in Christopher Designs (18)

Back in the 1990s, when the brilliance of the round cut diamonds have taken over the market by storm, the future of fancy cut diamonds started to become bleak. Compared to the brilliant round, the step-cut cushion or emerald looked less dazzling and almost entirely glassy. Then Christopher Slowinksi and his partners showed up with a clever innovation to these classic cuts with Christopher Design's Crisscut design. The unique crisscrossed configuration and facet arrangement brought new life to the emerald, asscher and cushion cuts. The crisscut pattern is carefully designed and cut using the most modern technologies to make light bounce off among facets, giving the stones a depth of fire, scintillation and brilliance that could almost rival any brilliant rounds. “I have always been intrigued with taking something established and making it even more beautiful,” explains Slowinski. And that is exactly what he did to the fading glories of the fancy cuts. Experience a fresh twist to the cuts you have always loved.
