Founded in 1852, Shreve & Co. has a legacy of being one of California’s most exceptional jewelers. Shreve the oldest existing retailer in San Francisco and has served a myriad of vibrant personalities during its colorful history.
Four years after the Gold Rush, George Coates Shreve and his nephew Samuel Shreve traveled from New York to California to open this family-owned shop that featured fancy European goods and California-crafted jewelry. Silver was plentiful, and the Shreves began creating trendsetting “must-haves” from high quality silver.
By the late nineteenth century, the quiet elegance of the store, the attention to detail in craftsmanship and the commitment to service made Shreve & Co. the jewelry store for the Bay Area’s most affluent clientele.
In March of 1906, the company relocated to a new earthquake-proof building at the corner of San Francisco’s Post and Grant streets. One month later, the great quake of 1906 practically leveled the city. But not the Shreve building. Loyal staff moved the valuable inventory to a vault as fire ravaged the city. It is said that the vault was so hot after the fire that it took three weeks before it could be opened.
Shreve & Co.’s role in history didn’t stop there. During World War I, Shreve & Co. became part of the war effort, converting the factory from silver production to items needed for the US Armed Forces. The war initiative ended, and, by 1921, the Shreve & Co. factory employed 600 skilled workers working on six floors of the famous Shreve building.
Throughout the twentieth century, Shreve & Co. has been celebrated around the globe for its innovative designs and impeccable craftsmanship. Shreve & Co. was commissioned to create the gift presented by the State of California to Queen Elizabeth II upon her coronation.
In 1992, Schiffman’s Inc., a venerable East Coast family jeweler with more than 110 years as one of the South’s leading luxury jewelers, and Suna Bros., a second-generation New York jeweler, acquired Shreve & Co.
